What Is Koenigsegg?

Koenigsegg is a Swedish super car manufacturer created by Christian Von Koenigsegg in 1994. Christian had the urge to make world class super cars, and did so without any engineering degree. Him and his team began the 12 years of prototyping that would eventually lead to their first street legal super car; the Koenigsegg CCX. The CCX blew car reporters away, winning the BBC Top Gear hyper car of the year award.

Breaking World Records

Throughout the last decade, Koenigsegg released a number of successful super cars, quickly moving into the hyper car category. Their most recent hyper car, the Koenigsegg Agera RS, was recently deemed the fastest car in the world. That title is a big deal in the car community, and was certainly a big deal for Koenigsegg.

The record was broken on November 4th, 2017 on an 11 mile closed section of Nevada State Route 160 in Pahrump, Nevada. The hyper car maintained an average speed of 277.73 mph; faster than any other car in the world. Just a week prior to this event, the Agera RS broke Koenigsegg's own world record for the fastest 0-400-0 km/h, doing so in only 33.29 seconds compared to their previous record of 36.44 seconds. How Did I Find Koenigsegg?

I became interested in Koenigsegg about three years ago when they released their hyper car called the one:1(pronounced one to one). At the 2014 Geneva Auto Show in Geneva, Switzerland, Koenigsegg shocked the world again with their newest car. The One:1 got its name because of the 1:1 ratio of power to weight. Koenigsegg designed this car with 1360 PS, and with a weight of 1360 kg. Truly an amazing piece of technology, the one:1 is what opened my eyes to Koenigsegg.

Where Do I See Koenigsegg in the Future?

Koenigsegg's most recent car, the Koenigsegg Regara, uses ground breaking technology never before seen in a car with such power. The Regera uses a hybrid design, giving it instant torque form a standstill, similar to Elon Musk's Tesla. The most advanced part of the Regara is not the hybrid design, but the transmission; or the lack of. Christian Von Koenigsegg invented and implemented his own transmission in the Regera called the Koenigsegg Direct Drive (KDD). The KDD is a single gear, direct drive system that allows for immediate electric propulsion of the Agera. This advanced technology only weighs 194 lbs more than a traditional 7 speed manual gearbox, and provides much better performance, and economic benefits.

This type of hybrid hyper car is where I see Koenigsegg going in the future. I believe that they will continue to build traditional combustion engine cars, but put a lot of time and resources into the design and production of electric or hybrid vehicles. Koenigsegg is not a very well know company, for their cheapest vehicle starts at around $1.8 million, but with their technological advancements and their stellar design and innovation, I see Koenigsegg changing the way that vehicles of the future will be made.
